This article examines the emergence of big data and the controversy over its use to potentially erode individual privacy. It explores in depth some of the questions currently being debated worldwide, such as whether the benefits of big data outweigh the risks, whether or not big data is speeding the erosion of privacy, and what sort of federal regulations should be enacted in the United States to protect individuals’ right to privacy. It provides background information on the evolution of big data and how it became a hot topic in American politics. Lastly, this article discusses how big data is used to hunt down criminals, as well as the friction between data brokers, privacy advocates, and individuals over the use of individual information collected online.

This article explores the forces behind the social media boom and the changing norms and mores about privacy and use of networks to socialize. It weighs out some of the questions about how social media are changing people’s lives. Internet users and technology analysts consider whether or not social media foster greater community engagement, make personal relationships more difficult, or erode privacy. This article tracks the development of modern social life and the rise of social media, and assesses the current situation vis-à-vis profits from social media, control over data, and regulations to limit access to data.
